Someone just moved to your area. They need a new dentist. They opened Google, typed "dentist near me," and picked one of the top three results. If your practice wasn't there, you didn't get a chance and you never will, until you fix what's wrong.

We've looked at hundreds of dental practice websites and Google listings. The same problems come up over and over. None of them are hard to fix. Most dentists just don't know they exist.

Problem 1: You're Not in Google's "Map Pack"

When someone searches "dentist near me," Google shows three local results above everything else the Map Pack. If you're not in it, you're effectively invisible for local searches. Most of the clicks go to those three listings.

Getting into the Map Pack comes down to three things: your Google Business Profile completeness, your review count and rating, and your website's authority. Most dental practices fail on all three.

84%
of dental searches happen on mobile
3-pack
captures over 60% of clicks for local searches
72%
of patients check reviews before booking a new dentist

Problem 2: Your Google Business Profile Is Missing Key Services

Most dental practices list themselves as "Dentist" and stop there. That's a single category covering a single search query. You're missing everyone searching for:

Each of those is a separate search category. If you offer any of these services, you should have them listed in your Business Profile categories, your website headings, and your page content. Google can't infer what you offer you have to tell it explicitly.

Emergency dental searches convert extremely well. Someone in tooth pain at 9pm is going to call whoever shows up first. If "emergency dentist" isn't on your profile and website, you're handing those patients to whoever did add it.

Problem 3: You Have Under 50 Reviews

The average top-ranking dental practice in a mid-size city has 80-150 Google reviews. If you have 12, you're not competing even if you're genuinely better.

The problem isn't your patients. Most happy dental patients never think about leaving a review. They had a good experience, paid, left. Done. The practices with 100+ reviews built a system: they ask every patient, they make it easy (direct link via text), and they remind once if no response.

That's the entire difference. There's no trick. You just have to ask consistently.

Problem 4: Your Website Doesn't Have Service Pages

A dental website with one "Services" page listing everything in bullet points is not helping you rank for anything specific. Google ranks individual pages, not websites. If you want to show up for "dental implants [city]," you need a page specifically about dental implants that mentions your city.

What actually works: one page per major service. Cleanings, whitening, implants, veneers, Invisalign, emergency care, pediatric dentistry each gets its own page with a real description, your location mentioned, and a clear call to book. This is how a solo practice competes with a dental chain.

Problem 5: You're Not Capturing Insurance Searches

One of the most common dental searches is "[insurance name] dentist near me." If your website and Business Profile don't list every insurance you accept, you're invisible to every patient searching that way.

This is a five-minute fix. Add a page or section to your website titled "Insurance We Accept" and list them all. Then add the same information to your Google Business Profile description.

Patients who find a dentist through an insurance search convert at a much higher rate than general searches they've already decided they want to book, they just need to find someone in-network.

The Bottom Line

The dentist ranking above you in local search probably isn't better. They have more reviews, a complete Business Profile with the right categories, and service pages on their website. That's it. Everything described above is fixable in a few hours of work, zero advertising budget required.
